Koo Theater: Converging the New Generation of Opera, Implementing a Creative New Platform

The C. F. Koo Foundation's Koo Theater gathers innovative works from artists in traditional opera, looking at tradition through contemporary new thinking. It carries on the legacy through experimentation, deconstructing and then innovating, highlighting the new spirit of captivating opera.

Since its inception in 2015, the C. F. Koo Foundation has hoped to encourage cross-disciplinary, cross-temporal, and cross-genre experimental creations at Koo Theater, blending opera with contemporary theatrical elements to express universal values. By 2022, five sessions have been organized, bringing together eight new teams. The new generation's energy converges in small theaters, providing a stage for creators who love traditional opera, dream big, and are willing to implement, demonstrating the possibilities of experimental theater.

In 2022, in response to the ongoing impact of the pandemic on the performing arts community and to offer more creative opportunities, the "Sailing Against the Wind" million-dollar collection project was launched. This project provided subsidies for production costs and performance stages, calling for creative new works. The diversity of the submissions included puppet theater, storytelling, opera, indigenous songs and dances, modern dance, drama, Western vocal music, and jazz, fully showcasing the explosive creative potential of Taiwan's performing arts.
