Shao Jiang-Hai was a master of Taiwanese opera. This is a story about his efforts to preserve Taiwanese opera in Taiwan and across the Taiwan Strait during the period of Japanese colonization. Jiang-Hai could do without food, but not without Taiwanese opera. He endured personal insults but would never tolerate any disrespect towards the art form. He channeled his intense emotions into his performances, bringing joy to audiences.

Princess Du Lan-Duo created three challenging riddles for her suitors to solve. A noble man, known only as Nameless, became utterly enchanted after a look at the princess's portrait through the latter’s maid, Liu-Er. Determined, he traveled to the capital to propose. He matched wits and martial skills with the princess and proved equal. The emperor welcomed Nameless to be his son-in-law; Nameless, however, declined and instead posed a final riddle to the princess as a wager.

"Chi-sang Town," based on the Qing dynasty classic The Three Heroes and Five Gallants, recounts the life of Judge Bao Zheng. Orphaned young and raised by his sister-in-law, Wu Miao-Zhen, Bao Zheng faced a moral dilemma after becoming a judge when his nephew, Bao Mian, the corrupted county magistrate of Xiaoshan, committed a crime that warranted death. Wu Miao-Zhen confronted Bao Zheng in Chi-sang Town, tearfully accusing him of being ungrateful. Bao Zheng responded with gentle words, leading to a reconciliation that mended their familial bond.

During the Ming dynasty,

young Miss Zhou Feng-Ying’s family was framed by Yan Song and forced to leave their hometown. Feng-ying and her mother opened an inn at Xinan Post for survival and for vengeance. One day, a hurried-looking young man and a young woman checked in the inn. Feng-ying's mother suspected they were associated with Yan Song and informed Feng-Ying of the thought. At night, Feng-Ying, skillful in martial arts, disguised herself as a bandit, intending to kill the guests. Unexpectedly, she fell in love with the young man. The young man and the woman, whom he called his sister, both rejected Feng-Ying’s advances. Feng-Ying forced the young man into the bridal chamber only to discover there the man she was truly destined to marry.

Garden Encounter

Renowned courtesan Xie Su-Qiu admired the talented scholar Zhao Ru-Zhou but could never find a chance to meet him. Through the arrangements of a Master Qian, she disguised herself as the daughter of a prefect and moved into the west garden of the prefect’s residence, near Zhao’s home. Xie Su-Qiu then devised a "garden rendezvous" in the night. As anticipated, Zhao fell in love with her at first sight, and a mutual affection between the two youngsters was sparkled.

 

Nine Dragons Cup

Emperor Kangxi's treasured Nine Dragons Cup went missing, prompting him to order Huang San-Tai, a hero who had previously saved the royal carriage, to find the cup. The entire Huang family was at risk of calamity if the cup was not found. During an investigation, Huang San-Tai’s apprentice Ji Quan learned that the cup had gone through Wang Yan’s hands and ended up in Zhou Ying-Long’s. Yang and Wang devised a plan to present a lavish gift to Zhou Ying-Long on Zhou’s birthday and, through a decoy, successfully retrieved the Cup and delivered it to Huang San-Tai.
