The Marriage of Liu Bei and Sun Shang-Xiang
An episode in “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. Sun Quan and Zhou Yu schemed to lure Liu Bei away from Jing-Zhou so that they could seize the city. They proposed marriage between Liu and Sun’s sister, Princess Sun Shang-Xiang, but Liu was asked to travel to the Sun’s territory for a formal proposal. Liu’s adviser, Zhuge Liang, saw through the trap. He not only saved Jing-Zhou City but also brought Liu Bei and Sun Shang-Xiang together into a happy marriage.

Premier Liu Yong: the Midnight Court
During Emperor Qian-Long’s inspection visit to Jiangning, he encountered a beautiful woman named Yin-Hong and followed her to Qin-Xin Pavilion. At the same time, Liu Yong, the prefect of Jiangning, conducted an anti-vice operation. By mistake he arrested Emperor Qian-Long and his officer, He Shen, and put them in jail.
The local governor, Ye Guo-Tai, saw this as an opportunity. He commanded Liu to punish the two prisoners severely. Liu Yong quickly came up with a clever plan through which he managed to protect Emperor Qian-Long’s reputation while exposing Ye Guo-Tai’s sinister plot, ensuring that justice was served.

Disciplining a Stepson
Mr. Xue’s third wife Wang Chun-E was informed that her husband had died in a distant land. Unlike the first and second wife of Xue’s, who remarried without hesitation, Wang took on the responsibility of raising Xue’s young son, Yi-Ge, and caring for the loyal servant, Xue Bao.
To support the family, Wang worked tirelessly weaving cloth to provide for Yi-Ge’s education;
however, Yi-Ge was lazy and more interested in playing than studying. When teased by others for being ill-bred, he lashed out at Wang, accusing her of disciplining a child that was not her own.
Frustrated, Wang cut the fabric she was weaving in two! Xue Bao stepped in and advised Yi-Ge to beg for Wang’s pardon. Yi-Ge apologized sincerely to Wang.
